When the sea is. Hence! What cares these roarers for the name of king?

[these roarers] is a durational event that draws together the bodily movements of participants and the rhythm and fragility of speech, with the mutability of the coastal borderline of Whitstable.

In the opening scene of Shakespeare’s The Tempest ‘these roarers’ are the wind and waves of the storm, and they mark a moment when nature’s force effects an egalitarian undoing of the status of the king. The crisis is witnessed by the sea itself into which human speech is eventually dissipated and absorbed.

Through an engagement with an eclectic range of texts, this event draws in a multiplicity of voices and an intertwining of the private and the shared. The work is open to all to participate; an open and collective living body of readers, speaking and moving with and to each other and the sea.

Visit at any point between 11:00-13:00 and 14:00-16:00 to join the reading. (There will be a break from 13:00 – 14:00.) Texts provided.
