Celebrating Drew Gallery Projects Archive

Friday 8 June 2018
16:30—18:30

Umbrella Community Centre

Chaired by Judith Carlton
with Sandra Drew, Caroline Douglas, Sofia Niazi & Sue Jones

Arrival time is 16:30 for afternoon tea with sandwiches and cakes (free of charge).
Level access to the café is via the garden (accessed through the alley at the side of the Umbrella Centre).

In the 1980s curator Sandra Drew staged a series of ground-breaking exhibitions in locations around Canterbury. Drew Gallery Projects supported artists in the early stages of their careers, often experimenting with (then) new media including video and performance, and featured many women artists.

Collaborations with students at UCA (then Kent Institute of Art & Design) enriched the supportive and open environment.

The site-responsive projects put Canterbury on the map as a place with a pioneering visual art scene. This talk, chaired by Judith Carlton (Director, Cafe Gallery Projects) brings together Sandra Drew with Caroline Douglas (Director, Contemporary Art Society); Sofia Niazi (artist and illustrator, co-founder of OOMK and Rabbits Road Press) and Whitstable Biennale Director Sue Jones, to discuss Drew Gallery Projects and its legacies.

The talk launches a wider project, to include a publication and exhibitions over 2018 – 2019 in Canterbury, Folkestone and London (curated by Judith Carlton), plus an online archive hosted by University for the Creative Arts.

Places are limited and booking is advisable.
