Katrin Albrecht‘s Garden City Manifesto Banners were created in collaboration with young people from and near Ebbsfleet as part of This Must Be the Place, Cement Fields’ long-term collaborative project exploring and shaping Ebbsfleet Garden City as it is built.

Through a series of workshops, including sessions at North Kent College and Ebbsfleet Academy, Katrin asked young people from the area to imagine their ideal Garden City – what would it look and feel like? What would be there? What natural elements would need to be there to make it perfect for them?

Drawing from her experience as a flag-maker, Katrin used a cut-and-paste method in which bits of unrelated fabric can be patched together to make a whole. Formerly a technique she’s used to cut and re-assemble national flags, this time it resulted in 3 manifesto banners that evoke the feeling of a summery flower meadow, full of ideas for the ideal Garden City.

This Must Be the Place is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, and by Ebbsfleet Development Corporation.
